• Milky Watermelon Drink

I was reading through comments on a Facebook group I belong to and they were talking about watermelon having very versatile uses. It got me thinking about ways I can play with watermelon and transform it from the regular drink to something more decadent like a milky watermelon drink.

Watermelon is a great fruit to consume if you are on a diet. Certainly not in the way I would be making it today but definitely on it’s own it’s great. It is rich in vitamins, it is a low calorie fruit and very refreshing. I added dates to my recipe to increase the iron content and nutritional value of this drink. Dates are also rumored or maybe even confirmed to be great aphrodisiacs so if this is right up your alley, go for it. I would still maintain that dates are high sugar so, you may not want to saturate the drink with dates because then it becomes too sweet to drink. If you notice from the recipe, I also added a little bit of ginger for that extra kick. In my opinion, it just adds character to the drink. If you are lactose intolerant, I would recommend substituting the milk for coconut milk or almond milk, even soy milk works.

If you have been following my blog for sometime, you know by now that my favorite things are coconut milk, pepper and watermelon definitely ranks high on that list. I would upload some other variations of watermelon drinks in the course of the next few weeks. For now however, enjoy this simple milky watermelon drink that I am enjoying as I type this post to you.

P:S – If you are wondering where to buy dates, check out supermarkets or the hausa traders at a market. They are more likely to have dates. Does anyone know what dates are called in Hausa? Please leave a comment and help others 🙂

For fitfam, low calorie almond or soy milk works 🙂 You would have to limit it to one piece of date if at all you want the sweetness or you can eliminate it altogether
