• Shredded Beef Sauce

    We put out a post asking our fans what posts they would like to see on the blog. We figured this would be the best way to satisfy our fans needs as opposed to just posting our experiments and food musings. I absolutely loved preparing this shredded beef sauce dish as it came very close to what we buy from Chinese restaurants. The only missing ingredient was raw MSG which i decided to stay away from because of the adverse health effects. If you cannot find shredded beef in the market, buy your beef and slice very thinly to achieve the same effect. 

    Recipe for Shredded Beef Sauce

    Ingredients

    2 cups of shredded beef

    1 teaspoon of soy sauce (low sodium)

    1.5 tablespoons of corn starch

    3 thin slices of ginger

    1 yellow scotch bonnet pepper

    1 clove of garlic

    2 sticks of spring onions

    1 green bell pepper

    1 teaspoon of butter

    A pinch of sugar

    1/2 cooking spoon of oil

    1 teaspoon of red wine (optional)

    Salt to Taste

    1/3 cup of water

    Method

    Marinate your shredded beef with the corn starch, soy sauce and red wine. Leave for an hour or two.

    In a pan, heat up the butter and stir fry the shredded beef till well browned on medium heat. Take out the beef and if necessary, add the rest of the oil to the pan.

    Fry the spring onions, ginger, garlic and peppers. Add the beef and stir fry, add the sugar and salt.

    Add 1/3 cup of water to the sauce and allow to simmer for about 5 minutes on low-medium heat.

    Serve with Fried rice

        Hello Helen, Thanks for the kind words. MSG is mono sodium glutamate which is a type of seasoning but is known to be very harsh and some say causes cancer

      I love your blog and you are doin an awesome job. Please can you explain more on the soy sauce. I mean is it available in nigeria and if not can i prepare the sauce without it?

        Thank you. Soy sauce is available in Nigeria. Supermarkets have it but in the absence of it, maggi sauce can be a substitute but its not the same.

      Please can u give me an example of red and white wine I could use for cooking cos when I get to the wine section in supermarkets,I don’t know which to get for cooking as there are so many and I wouldn’t know which Is used for cooking or not.

      Hello please can I use any other flour in place of corn flour? And must I add sugar as I really don’t like sugar in my meals

        Hello Inye, You can use normal flour but please make sure you dissolve in warm water first before adding to your sauce so it does not lump up. You don’t have to add sugar, its just how these recipes are created.
