• Zobo Drink

Last Year, I was trying to make zobo drink here in San Francisco so I went to the Middle Eastern Grocery Store to buy zobo leaves otherwise known as sorrel leaves. I bought it without really doing much with it. I brewed it occasionally as a detoxifying tea and trust me it definitely cleanses the system.

Zobo drink is consumed in many parts of Africa. Some refer to it as Bissap while others call it Zobolo. The recipe across Africa is somewhat the same with slight variations in each country. When I was young, I remember using it to wash some of my mum’s kettles by soaking the kettle in the zobo drink. It cleaned it right out.

Fast forward to this year and one of my friends from school asked me for the actual zobo recipe and I realized I had never posted it so I decided to do something about it immediately. Here you go Adunni, hope the recipe works out for you 🙂 This is also a great drink to make on Valentines day 🙂

    Recipe for Zobo Drink

    Ingredients

    2 cups of zobo leaves

    2 teaspoons of cloves

    7 medium pineapple chunks

    Orange peels

    2 tablespoons of lemon juice

    Small chunk of ginger

    7 cups of water

    Syrup

    1 cup of water

    1/3 cup of sugar

    Method

Rinse your zobo leaves to get rid of the excess dirt.

In a pot pour in all your ingredients and water to bring to boil for about 15-20 minutes on medium heat.

Using a sieve, strain the juice into a bowl or bottle.

For the syrup, pour the water into a pot and mix in the sugar and boil for about 5-8 minutes on medium heat.

Pour the syrup into the zobo juice mix, stir and place in your fridge till it cools.

Serve as a cold refreshing drink.

    Garnish with Cinnamon sticks (optional)
