• Puff Puff – Nigerian Doughnut Snack

Every Nigerian party has featured these adorable balls of puff puff. If you go to a Nigerian party and they do not serve you puff puff, it’s not legit. Take my word for it. Personally every time I think of puff puff, I can almost hear the owambe (party) music and smell that party rice. (doing a mini dance as i’m writing this). What I have realized however, with puff puff is that it doesn’t have to be type cast to the small chops basket on your table. It’s amazing all by itself or however you choose to dress it up. Some people choose to make their puff puffs with very little sugar and then use more sugar as a topping. Whatever your preferred style of serving this yummy goodness, it’s guaranteed to make your tummy glad.
Enjoy this simple recipe of puff puff!

    Recipe for Puff Puff

    Ingredients

    4 cups Flour

    1 tsp nutmeg (optional)

5 Tablespoons Sugar (You may add more if you like)

A pinch of salt to taste

    1.5 Tablespoons Yeast

2 cups of Warm water – or add more till the mix is a paste

    Method

Mix the Yeast with warm water and leave for 5 minutes to stand. Bubbles may start to form at this point depending on the quality of the yeast.

Mix all ingredients together to make sure everything is incorporated and add the yeast mix slowly and mix well into a smooth paste.

Cover with a damp tea towel and allow to prove in a warm environment. It will double in size when risen but be sure to beat the mix again to cut it back to original size.  This usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the type of yeast you have.

Deep Fry in hot vegetable oil in small balls until golden brown

Thanks for the tip. Sometimes I also heat up the oven just to be warm enough and place the bowl in there with the oven door open and the oven off. But the hot water bit would work as well.

Just made this. Turned out quite well. Although as already stated you could add a bit more sugar if you want to taste the sweet. Thanks afrolems as always. Cedar

Hello Debbie, I have not personally tried it but I think you can after all there are gluten free doughnut recipes. Texture will be different but i am sure it can be achieved.

Hello Osa, you can refrigerate your puff puff and place in the oven the next day but it doesn’t typically taste the same so its best to fry on the day of and consume then.
